Seven Laws of Emotional Intelligence

7 Laws of Emotional Intelligence :Major(R)Khalid Nasr
The 7 Laws help you to recognise that your feelings and emotions are powerful. You become more effective in situations when you learn and apply practical ways to manage them.
Let’s look at each of the 7 Laws:Law #1: I am responsible for my own feelings:In order to be responsible, you must first recognise your feelings.Hurricane Dean affects everyone, often in extremely tragic ways. Some people lost their life or loved ones, many lost their homes, their crops, their property, their animals, their pets. Nearly everyone lost their sense of comfort. Even if you haven’t experienced a loss, your feelings are affected when you hear and see news reports of the devastation that other people have suffered. Law #1 encourages you to recognise what you are feeling, for example, anger, bewilderment, shame, frustration, grief, horror and so on. You don’t need to use pretty words, but you must find a way to express how you are feeling. Some people cry, others bawl out, some play music, be it gospelor reggae (Bob Marley often features strongly), others play dominos, others stay in touch by telephone or cleave to loved ones or neighbours.Prayer and meditation work for many people. Some write or read poetry or their Bible.Law #2: I am responsible for my own behaviour:Find a way to express how you feel. Being emotionally upset and even traumatised is a natural reaction to surviving a potentially catastrophic natural disaster. You are a unique individual and you’ll express your anguish in a unique way.Psychologists warn that we experience loss in 4 stages;1. denial2. questioning3. acceptance and4. recovery. Each of us progresses through these stages at different rates. These strong feelings can continue to affect you long after the hurricane has passed. It may help if you recognise that these feelings are a natural part of the grieving process.Law #3: I always have choices about how I respond to situations, events and people: Recognise that those around you may respond very differently to the hurricane. Encourage them to express how they feel,as long as they are not harming you or others. Don’t get caught up in thinking that their behaviour is odd. A hurricane is an abnormal event. Don’t add to your stress by being intolerant of those around you. Your ability to empathise will help you to pull through whatever the circumstances.Take special care with your children and young people in your care. They will often be really terrified. Encourage them to express their emotions, maybe they will want to talk or draw pictures about the experience during or after the hurricane.
Law #4: No-one can make me upset, angry, happy etc:
Law #5: Identifying my choices empowers me to take fresh look at my behaviour:Accept your limitations. You can’t have regular hot baths, you can’t eat exactly what you want, you can’t watch your favourite TV show. You can’t work as efficiently as normal.Yet somehow, mysteriously, the world still turns. You’ll raise your stress levels if you harbour unrealistic expectations of what you can do. Clearly identify the things that you have no control over and separate out the things that you can influence. Law # 6: Recognising my range of choices is an excellent way to start changing my behaviour for the better: Now that you’ve separated these two areas, focus on the things that you can influence and start to take step by step action. Listen to the radio and get weather updates, share the crops that have fallen from your trees with your neighbour, make sure that everyone around you is safe, seek help from your pastor. As you take these small steps, your confidence will gradually increase. Stand firm and keep your spirits up. Law# 7: I can practice and learn new and more effective behaviours: Life is here to teach us things. If you learn from your experience, we can move forward and deal with whatever comes your way. You’ve done it before, step by step and in faith and you can do it again. The 7 Laws don’t an insure you against a disaster, however I encourage you to accept that how you feel and react to the hurricane is under your control. Express your feelings, help others to express their emotions, accept the aspects of the disaster that aren’t within your control and work step by step on the aspects that you can affect, learn from the experience and progress, step by step towards a better future.

Managing Our Anger and Worries

Managing Our Anger & Worries: Major ® Khalid Nasr
1. Managing Anger :Those having a tough time in controlling their anger, an anger management plan might help. Try these self-help anger management tips:
Ask yourself: 'Is my anger necessary enough and is the issue worth it?' Chances are, you will see things from a calmer perspective.
'What is the worst consequence of the object of my anger?' If someone cut in front of you at the bookstore checkout, you will probably find that three minutes is not such a big deal.
'Is it going to help me or others in any way?' The anger is going to affect you physically as well as your relationship with others who get affected by the anger.
Imagine yourself doing the same thing. Admit that you sometimes cut in front of another driver, too, sometimes by accident. Do you get angry at yourself?
Ask yourself: 'Did that person do this to me on purpose?' In many cases, you will see that they were just careless or in a rush, and really did not mean you any harm.
Try counting to 10 before saying anything. This may not address the anger directly, but it can minimise the damage you will do while angry.
Try some 'new and improved' variations of counting to 10. For instance, try counting to 10 with a deep slow breath in between each number. Deep breathing helps people relax.
Ask yourself about the anger-inducing issue/situation/event: Is there any alternate way to look at it? You may be looking from an angle that makes you feel angry about the situation. If you look at it from some other angle you may be able to understand or you won't get angry at all.
Visualise a relaxing experience: Close your eyes, and travel there in your mind. Make it your stress-free oasis.
2.Techniques to eliminate worries :
Write down what you are worried about. Do your best to carefully think of what you are really worried about. There is said to be only a few dozen or so general fears. No one seems to agree what a 'general' fear is, and if you could overcome your general fears, you could eliminate worry completely. For example, about job demands, about the future, about family or social responsibilities.
Get all the facts related to the problem and don't allow yourself to be misled by any false information and to even more worry.
Analyse the facts. Once you have enough information to help you face the worry, make some sense out of the data. What does it all mean, if anything, at this point?
Ask yourself what is the worst that can happen. At this point, you can make a more realistic assessment of what the worst-case scenario would be.
Accept the worst. Acceptance is almost always an instant cure for worry. Acceptance, however, is not easy and often takes time. By accepting the worst, you are in a situation where things can only improve.
Improve on the worst. Here is where you consider the law of averages. What are the chances the worst will actually come to pass? Is it really worth worrying about?
Decide what you can do about it. Brainstorm. List everything that comes to mind that you can do about improving the situation. Spend as much time as needed on this part.
Act on the decision. If there is any point to worry, it is about taking action toward making positive changes. From your list of possible actions, decide what you are going to do and take action right away. Do not procrastinate. The longer you let your worries build inside, the more emotional and physical damage you are doing to yourself. It is probable that through this process you will end up eliminating the worry before you complete all the steps.
That is fine. The point of the exercise is to eliminate the worry, not to complete all the steps of the process.

Life Governing Principles

Life Governing Priciples : Major(R)Khalid Nasr
What we do is driven by who we are, what we believe & value and by the principles that we live by.Principles give us direction to live our lives. The Priciples Governing My Life are : 1.God first, others second, me third :I recognize that I must have my priorities right. Some people think that the way to success is to put themselves first. This is short-term thinking. Yes, you may be able to accomplish much in the near-term, but long-term, the best is accomplished by those who live by the above. 2.Always be completely honest:You really only have your character when it comes right down to it, and honesty is the quickest way to determine your character. Live in such a way that you can be completely honest and be willing to accept the responsibility that being completely honest will bring. 3.You reap what you sow:This is the most common truth on earth. You put an apple seed into the ground, you get an apple tree. An orange seed produces an orange tree. If you invest, your money will grow.Things are great to have and so is money, but true riches are the priceless things we can’t buy, like our family, our integrity and the sense of a job well done. 4.Work smart – and hard:Some say you should work smart, not hard. I say work smart and hard. A good day of hard work is a blessing and ought to be appreciated. Hard work is what changes the world – as long as it is smart, hard work! 5.Fulfill Your Commitments :If there is one thing I can’t stand it is when someone doesn’t do what they say they will. When we don’t do what we say we will, we essentially say that the job wasn’t important, the people we promised it to aren’t important, and that we can’t be trusted. This is a good way to short-circuit your success. 6.Challenge others to greatness:There are enough people who will hold out the low bar for people to step over. I want to be a person who holds up the high bar, causing people to have to run and jump with all their might, and when they clear that high bar, I want to be there celebrating with them! 7.Find ways to generously give of your resources:The old saying is true – you can’t take it with you. But you can spread it around to lots of people while you are here. If we wait until we die to give money away, we don’t get any satisfaction in seeing how it is used and enjoyed. Write a few good-sized checks each month! 8.Treat people right no matter how they treat you:You cannot control another person’s behavior. It took me a long time to realize that. I can only control my behavior. And I can choose to do what is right no matter how another person treats me. If everybody retaliated every time someone treated them bad, we would have a mess on our hands. Instead, choose to act appropriately at all times. When relationships go bad, be the first to hold out the olive branch. Life is too short to leave a relationship broken. As much as it is up to me, I will pursue reconciliation, for their sake, and for mine. I don’t want to get to the end of my life and wish I tried harder in my relationships. For this reason I attempt to restore broken relationships. 9.Regularly try new things:This is what keeps the spice of life going! Try new foods, go to new places, and make new friends. You will be amazed at the joy you receive and are able to give when you make it a habit to try new things. Break out of the mold, do something unusual today! Treat everyone equally. No one is better than anyone else. I know people with tens of millions of dollars and people who do not have two nickels to rub together. They are both equally valuable and worthy of being treated as such. Don’t fall into the trap of treating some people better than others. It doesn’t matter what color they are or how much money the have or what country they come from, treat them with the respect and dignity each human deserves.Use any success you have to help others. What good is success that only helps you? Instead, use the money you make to help others. Use the connections you make to help someone else up. Use the knowledge you achieve to give someone else a leg up. Take what you have and give to others so that they may join you on the journey of success. 10.Look down the economic scale more often than up:When I look up the economic scale too often I become greedy and unsatisfied. I become selfish. Looking down at others who have less than me on a regular basis keeps me humble. It reminds me of all of the blessings I have and keeps me thankful for them.

Empowering Beliefs

Empowering Beliefs: Major(R)Khalid Nasr
I believe that all we need in our nation at this juncture of time is set of empowering beliefs in order to motivate us each day. The world is full of self-proclaimed victims, and sadly, it has become the cancer of our times. An empowering set of beliefs can help us create our own destiny, and put us firmly in charge of our future. Everything in life is a choice, but if you make a poor choice, there could be consequences. Life is truly full of choices -we have to empower ourself! Action Steps : 1.Find your motivator:We all need motivators, and for most of us, it is that carrot sitting just out of reach.Set some goals for ourselves and then decide what our motivators are going to be, and put them in writing. Post them on the refrigerator, your office, or wherever you will see them frequently. You will be amazed at your results! 2.Reward yourself throughout the day :If you want to improve your productivity and reduce stress, try the checklist method. Buy a steno notepad and write down all of the personal and professional tasks that you need to accomplish in the near future. Start each day by taking a pencil and prioritizing the top 5 items that you want to tackle (1 through 5.) As you complete each of the tasks, cross them out with a yellow highlight felt tip pen. You will be delighted with how good you feel each time you get to cross the items off. As new tasks evolve, simply add them to the list. Each day you should erase the previous day's priority rankings (1 to 5) written in pencil, and you will create a new priority for each day. You will find that this method reduces stress dramatically because a big part of stress is trying to retain all the tasks you have to perform. Writing them all down allows your mind to find "down time," which will also allow you to sleep better at night. Always keep a notepad in your nightstand or near your bed, so if you think of something important, you can write it down and get back to a peaceful night sleep (and not worry about trying to remember it until morning.) 3.Reduce stress - stop reading newspapers! So much of our day-to-day stress is actually a matter of our environment and we don't realize it. One way to reduce stress for many of us is to stop reading local newspapers: Local newspapers are always full of child abductions, rapes, murders, beatings, carjackings, fires, and other dramatic events. They also seem to get sensationalized too much since that is what the readers seem to gravitate to. Whether we subconsciously know it or not, we internalize these tragedies and retain them in our knowledge base. Determination is that extra little push that sets you apart from the crowd. With enough determination, goals never before thought possible can be achieved.
